Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking, an Enabling Spouse, and Encouragement for Helpful Change and Successful Alcoholism Treatment
It took several years but Emily eventually made up her mind that she had enough with her husband’s unhealthy drinking. She was sick and tired of seeing Barry come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking instead of spending much needed time with her and their two sons. She was also sick of the second DWI Barry recently got. Furthermore she was fed up from creating justifications for her husband when he couldn’t show up for work on time due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was worried about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Barry’s hazardous drinking. And lastly she was fed up from the shaky financial situation into which he had placed his family due to his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.
When Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Beneficial About a Person’s Drinking Problem
One Sunday morning when Emily was pondering what she could do about her husband’s careless and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something helpful to cut into the unhealthy cycle of Barry’s hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.
So she looked in the yellow pages under “alcohol treatment” and located many treatment facilities that were all located less than forty miles away from where she and Barry resided.
Because she didn’t know a great deal about these treatment clinics, she at long last finally decided to call some of them and ask a couple of questions. When she called each treatment clinic she identified who she was and stated that Barry, her husband, was manifesting abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also said that her spouse had a top quality health insurance program at his job and that residential or outpatient alcohol treatment would be covered if a physician in the company health network called for the treatment.
At one rehabilitation clinic, Emily was pleasantly surprised that she was able to converse directly with a doctor who suggested that she come to the rehabilitation center to talk about her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking behavior in much greater detail.
Emily Talks to a Doctor About Her Husband’s Excessive Drinking
When Emily arrived at the rehab clinic, she filled out some necessary paperwork and then after around ten or fifteen minutes got to see a counselor.
After listening to Emily talk about her husband’s excessive and hazardous drinking, the doctor in a supportive but resolute way explained to Emily how she probably contributed to her spouse’s unhealthy and excessive drinking through the years by rationalizing his drinking instead of letting him suffer the results of his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
Emily Finds Out She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Hazardous and Excessive Drinking
Stated in a slightly different way, the therapist told Emily that she may have been unintentionally enabling Barry’s abusive and careless drinking behavior. The physician also stressed the fact that while Emily could not control Barry’s behavior, with the guidance and encouragement of the rehab team at the treatment center she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Barry’s hazardous and excessive drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab facility so that he could discuss his abusive and careless drinking behavior with a healthcare professional.
The good news was that after Emily discussed this with Barry, and he saw that she was not joking, Barry told her that he had been very concerned about his harmful drinking behavior and that he was very comforted to realize that Emily wanted to do something helpful about his unhealthy drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a psychologist at the local alcohol treatment facility.
Barry Agrees to Meet With a Healthcare Practitioner About His Excessive Drinking
While simply calling a treatment facility does not guarantee that an individual’s careless drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one manifests will simply go away, calling for an appointment is clearly a required aspect in the rehab process. And due to the fact that Barry was serious about getting professional assistance for his abusive and excessive drinking, the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly increased.
